Exercise Following Varicose Vein Treatment

It’s quite common for physically active individuals suffering with varicose veins to be concerned about undergoing varicose vein treatment. They often wonder if treatments such as laser vein ablation in Mequon will interfere with their daily fitness routine. Thankfully, with today’s advanced technology and treatment options, invasive varicose vein surgery in Mequon requiring lengthy recovery times is no longer the norm.

The main complication vein doctors hope to avoid following varicose vein removal is the failure of the treated vessel to close. Varicose vein treatment is considered a success when the worked on veins constrict and ultimately dissolve or are reabsorbed by the body, rather than dilate and re-open. Therefore, patients undergoing varicose vein removal are asked not to exercise, lift weights or perform any other physical activity that would increase their heart rate for at least 24-48 hours after each of their respective procedures. Within a few days following their treatment, patients are encouraged to resume their normal fitness routines. Aerobic exercise such as waking has been shown to improve venous return to the heart and lower venous pressure.

Safe exercises 2-3 days after varicose vein treatment include:

  • Walking
  • Water Aerobics
  • Swimming
  • Yoga/ Stretching
  • Light weight lifting

It’s important to note that higher impact exercises such as running should be avoided for a minimum of 3-5 days after treatment or until a vein specialist near you gives the green light. Some vein doctors may even recommend wearing compression stockings during exercise to increase blood circulation and reduce strain on the affected area.

While all patients recover at varying speeds, at Lakeshore Veins, most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately or within a few days after their procedure. With real results and little to no downtime even fitness enthusiasts can’t find a reason to wait!
