Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins and small varicosities. This type of treatment uses an ultrasound guide, allowing vein specialists to see the diseased veins more clearly and create a precise map of spider veins within the legs. This procedure can reduce the need for surgery and is especially effective for veins that have returned after a previous treatment.

During sclerotherapy in Sheboygan an FDA- approved solution is injected directly into the spider vein (via a small-gauge needle) causing the inner lining of the blood vessel to shrink and close itself off.  Over the next few weeks the vein will be reabsorbed into the body and blood flow redirected to healthy veins. Each injection is carefully monitored on the ultrasound screen. A bandage is then placed over the injection site to provide compression to collapse the treated vein(s). Following sclerotherapy treatment patients are typically required to wear medium strength compression stockings for a minimum of 3 days to ensure the treated vessel closes properly.

Costs

  • Treatment costs will be discussed with you after the extent of your personalized treatment plan has been developed.

Possible Side Effects

  • Occasionally, blood and debris may become trapped in the vessel; leading to a bluish/blackish distended vein noticeable 1-4 weeks post procedure. This can be treated in the office by making a small pinhole in the skin and releasing the debris.

Return Visits

  • Following treatment your vein care specialist will want to complete a follow-up appointment to ensure you are healing properly. An ultrasound may be used to determine how well the veins responded to treatment.
