Frequently Asked Questions About Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a safe and minimally invasive spider vein treatment used in Mequon.  The procedure involves inserting a thin, small-gauge needle directly into the malfunctioning vein, where a solution is then delivered, causing the vein to collapse and seal shut. Blood is then re-routed to healthy veins in the surrounding area. Eventually, the diseased vein is dissolved by the body.

At Lakeshore Veins, many of our patients undergo sclerotherapy in Mequon after being fed-up with the appearance of spider veins in their legs. The following is a list of commonly asked questions regarding spider vein treatment in Mequon:

How effective is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is highly effective. On average, spider veins are successfully treated in two to four sessions. For patients with larger veins, four or more sessions may be needed. After treatment, it is recommended that patients wear compression hose for a minimum of 3 days to help keep the vessels sealed.

How much downtime should I plan for after sclerotherapy?

There is usually little to no downtime involved with sclerotherapy in Mequon, meaning you can immediately resume your normal daily activities.

Is discoloration or bruising after treatment permanent?

No, discoloration and bruising following sclerotherapy treatment is not permanent. For the few patients that do experience issues with pigmentation after sclerotherapy, 70-80 percent see it disappear within a period of 6 months while the other 20-30 percent see the color slowly return to near normal within a year.  As for bruising or swelling, blood and debris can become trapped in the vessel, leading to a bluish/blackish distended vein noticeable 1-4 weeks post procedure.

If you suffer with spider veins, sclerotherapy in Mequon is an excellent treatment option for both medical and cosmetic purposes. At Lakeshore Veins, our specialists have successfully treated thousands of patients with venous insufficiencies.
